🔀 According to research by the University of Cambridge (that name sounds familiar), accents are becoming more & more similar.
The article doesn’t explicitly state that the number of dialects has decreased.
However, it does mention ‘a clear pattern of levelling towards the English of the south-east; more and more people are using & pronouncing words in the way that people from London & the south-east do’.
