too long; didn’t read- ELT

It’s one of the most persistent myths about the human brain – that we only use 10% of its capacity. This long-held belief has been thoroughly debunked. However new research [there’s a paywall I’m afraid] has revealed that in fact our brains can store nearly 10 times more information than previously thought. The finding, published in Neural Computation, used advanced methods to quantify the strength of synaptic connections in a rat’s hippocampus, crucial for learning & memory.

The research, led by Samavat M [Jacobs School of Engineering, University of California, San Diego] applied Shannon information theory (a mathematical framework for quantifying information transmission, as if you didn’t know!) to measure the precision & capacity of synaptic information storage. They discovered synapses could store between 4.1 & 4.6 bits of information, far more than the previously assumed one bit per synapse.

Obligatory study-extrapolation warning!
Extrapolating these findings to estimate the total capacity of the human brain is challenging for several reasons:

1. The study focused on a specific region (the hippocampus) in rat brains & the information storage capacity may vary across different brain regions & species.

2. The human brain has billions of neurons & trillions of synaptic connections, making it difficult to directly calculate the total capacity from findings relating to individual synapses.

3. The brain’s information storage & processing mechanisms are highly complex & not directly comparable to digital storage devices or books.

A commonly cited estimate suggests that the human brain’s theoretical storage capacity could be around 2.5 petabytes (or 2.5 million GB) of information, which is roughly equivalent to all the information stored on the internet.
However, it’s important to note that this is a very rough estimate & does not accurately represent the brain’s actual information processing capabilities. The brain’s information processing & storage mechanisms are highly complex & not easily quantifiable in such units.

Teacher Takeaways?
Nothing specific comes to mind; I just think the findings are cool. After all, we are the universe’s way of trying to understand itself.
