I was rootling around on the internet & stumbled across this fascinating article by Arika Okrent which examines the question as to whether linguistics can truly be considered to be a science.
The Great Debate: Chomsky vs. Everett
At the heart of this debate lies Noam Chomsky’s “universal grammar” theory – the idea that all languages share an underlying structure rooted in human biology. This theory has been challenged by the discovery of the Amazonian language Pirahã, studied by Daniel Everett, which appears to lack recursion [the capacity to embed phrases within phrases indefinitely, allowing for complex sentence structures. For example, in the sentence “The cat that chased the mouse that stole the cheese is black“, each clause nests within another, demonstrating recursion.], a core feature of Chomsky’s theory. Nevertheless, Chomsky & his followers argue that the capacity for recursion is intrinsic, even if not always used, leading to questions about the falsifiability of linguistic theories.
Linguistics: Science or Pseudoscience?
The controversy touches on a broader issue: can linguistic theories be tested & falsified like scientific hypotheses? Philosopher Karl Popper emphasized that a theory must be testable & potentially falsifiable to be considered scientific. While theories like Einstein’s relativity can be tested through observable phenomena, linguistic theories often rely on abstract principles & crafted sentences rather than direct observations.
Bellow the Surface: The Intricacies of Linguistic Theory
Linguistics often delves into unseen structures, requiring us to infer rules from patterns in language use. For example, sentences like “Which book did John know the author who wrote?” reveal underlying grammatical rules when compared to acceptable sentences. This approach mirrors the abstract models used in physics, where simplified models help uncover deeper truths about the universe.
Minimalist Approach: Chomsky’s Evolution
Chomsky’s later “Minimalist Programme” aimed to simplify linguistic theory, focusing on elegance & parsimony. However, this abstraction can be difficult to communicate & understand, raising questions about the practical application of such theories in real-world language learning & teaching.
Ultimately, I don’t think we can reach much of a conclusion that will satisfy everyone. This issue of falsifiability and the scientific status of theories is common across many social sciences. In disciplines such as sociology, psychology & anthropology, theories often deal with complex, abstract constructs that can be difficult to test or falsify in a strictly scientific manner. Like Chomsky’s theory in linguistics, many social science theories provide valuable frameworks for understanding human behaviour and social phenomena, even if they don’t always conform to the rigorous standards of falsifiability that characterize the natural sciences.
