Why are we more likely to say “the dog chased the cat” instead of “the cat was chased by the dog”? This subtle choice reflects a universal tendency in human language to prioritize agents—the ones performing the action.

Recent research by Vanessa Wilson & colleagues suggests this bias may have its roots in the way our primate relatives process events. The researchers used eye-tracking technology to reveal how humans & great apes visually track agents & patients (receivers) in unfolding scenes. Their findings offer a fascinating glimpse into how our shared evolutionary past shaped the cognitive scaffolding for language.

The Study

Using infrared eye-tracking, researchers observed humans, six-month-old infants & great apes (e.g., chimpanzees, gorillas & orangutans) watching videos of social & non-social interactions. The goal? To understand how participants identified “event roles”—agents & patients.

Key findings:

  • Humans & apes alternated their gaze between agents & patients in unfolding scenes, demonstrating shared event-processing strategies.
  • Food-related scenes elicited the strongest focus on agents (survival instincts, perhaps?).
  • Infants, however, spent more time observing scene backgrounds, possibly due to developmental differences in visual processing.

These insights suggest that the cognitive foundations for understanding agents & actions predate language, forming a scaffold for its evolution.

Why It Matters

Understanding agents, actions, & patients is universal across human languages, reflecting a shared cognitive bias. This “event deconstruction” may stem from a social need to track relationships in complex environments—whether for survival, cooperation, or conflict.

Connections to Language Theories

Agent-first bias in language: Cross-linguistic research shows that humans universally prioritize agents in grammar (e.g., subject-verb-object structure in many languages). This parallels how apes process event roles visually.

Shared cognitive ancestry: The similar gaze patterns between humans & apes point to a shared evolutionary root. The ability to recognise agents & actions likely predated language but formed the scaffolding for its emergence.

From cognition to communication: While apes can identify agents & patients, only humans turned this into syntactic structures, encoding these observations into language. This aligns with theories (e.g., Tomasello’s Shared Intentionality) which argues that language evolved from our need to share information for cooperation & survival.

The study reminds us that our ability to process the world through the lens of “who is doing what to whom” is deeply ingrained in our biology. It’s a skill we share with our closest evolutionary relatives—great apes—but we’ve uniquely transformed it into language, enabling us to communicate complex ideas, form societies & create shared understanding.
