We often assume reading is a purely cognitive act—something that happens “in the head.” But new research suggests our environment might literally change the way we process words.
A 2024 study from Nebrija University (Madrid) & UiT Norway used virtual reality to simulate different weather conditions & visual contrasts while participants read words & sentences.
The study
Two experiments were run with 36 native Spanish speakers:
Experiment 1 (Lexical Decision Task) – participants identified whether letter strings were real Spanish words or pseudowords under sunny vs. rainy virtual conditions, and high vs. low text contrast.
Experiment 2 (Sentence Reading Task) – participants read simple sentences while their eye movements were tracked in the same weather & contrast conditions.
The findings
- Sunny skies = faster minds. In the single-word task, participants recognised real words significantly faster in sunny conditions & with high visual contrast.
- Rain slows us down. During sentence reading, “rainy” weather increased reading time by about 123 milliseconds and caused more eye fixations, though comprehension remained stable.
- Contrast mattered less for longer texts, suggesting that context & prediction help readers overcome low visibility when processing meaning.
Why this matters
Psycholinguistics has long focused on the internal: word frequency, working memory, predictability. But this study joins a growing body of work (e.g. Oppenheimer, 2008; Rayner et al., 2006) showing that extralinguistic context—lighting, contrast, even weather—affects how fluently we process text.
By using VR, the researchers achieved ecological validity—studying reading in realistic, dynamic environments while maintaining scientific control. It’s a methodological leap that could reshape how we test literacy, attention & comprehension in the digital age.
