Pronunciation drills can feel stiff & awkward, leaving learners tense & self-conscious—so what happens when the partner giving feedback is a chatbot?
The study
Whyunyoung Choi (Lancaster University, 2025) explored how Generative AI (ChatGPT-4o) affects EFL learners’ pronunciation ability, speaking anxiety, motivation & confidence in social interaction—using Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) to frame the process.
Over 10 weeks, 15 Korean high-school students (B2–C1 level) used ChatGPT for pronunciation practice three times a week. The AI offered real-time feedback on stress, rhythm, & intonation, tailoring scripts to each learner’s career interests. Surveys, pronunciation assessments, & interviews provided a mix of quantitative & qualitative data.
The findings
Learners’ pronunciation became clearer & more natural, but the emotional impact was just as striking. Anxiety levels dropped, motivation increased, & students grew more confident speaking English in real conversations—joining clubs, chatting with native speakers, & taking initiative to use English beyond the classroom.
Students said Gen-AI feedback helped them notice specific pronunciation features & feel more in control of their learning. Many also shifted their mindset—from trying to “sound native” to aiming for “clear communication”. Still, they valued the emotional encouragement of teachers & peers, seeing AI as a complement, not a replacement.
The study also found that teachers’ roles evolved: they became coaches & facilitators, focusing on empathy, confidence, & human connection while AI managed the technical details.
Teacher Takeaways?
- Blend software with wetware: Use AI for micro-feedback on pronunciation while maintaining human guidance for emotional support.
- Focus on intelligibility: Help students value clarity over accent imitation.
- Encourage reflection: Have learners question, verify, & interpret AI feedback to build digital & linguistic autonomy.
AI may correct a sound, but it can’t reassure a nervous speaker. That, it seems, is still our job.
Could AI actually make pronunciation teaching more human? How do you strike this balance in your classroom?
