Most of us imagine fluent reading as something smooth & almost automatic. Our eyes move forward, our brain keeps pace, & we barely notice the tiny guesses we make about what’s coming next. In the classroom we often build on this idea, encouraging learners to “predict from context” as if the brain does this with no extra effort.
But a new study by Schuckart, Martin, Tune, Schmitt, Hartwigsen & Obleser, published in eLife, suggests prediction is more demanding than it looks. The research wasn’t designed with language teaching in mind, yet it offers a fresh window into how readers of all ages use prediction – & what happens when the brain has less attention available.
The study
The researchers worked with adults aged 18–85. Everyone read short texts on a screen, one word at a time. In some parts of the experiment, they also had to keep track of a simple colour‑memory task at the same time. This extra task was there for one reason: to make their attention a bit busier, so the team could see what happens to prediction when the brain has less “spare space”.
To estimate how predictable each word was, the researchers used a language model to calculate how likely the next word would be. Reading speed showed how much predictability helped, & comprehension checks ensured participants were genuinely following the texts.
The findings
- Predictable words were read faster across all ages.
- When attention was busier, the benefit of prediction shrunk.
- Older adults relied more on prediction, gaining a bigger speed boost from predictable words.
- But their advantage was also more fragile: when the extra task made things harder, their prediction benefit dropped more sharply.
- A second study with a new group of participants replicated the key pattern, strengthening confidence in the results.
Imagine reading: “She reached for the…”
Most readers expect keys or phone.
But if your attention is already stretched, that helpful guess becomes weaker.
If you’re older, you may rely even more on prediction – until the task becomes too demanding.
Why this matters for ELT
This study sits at the crossroads of reading research & classroom practice. It reinforces something teachers often sense: prediction is powerful, but it isn’t effortless. It draws on attention, working memory & general cognitive resources – all of which vary across learners, tasks & ages.
Teacher Takeaways?
- Don’t assume prediction is automatic. Activities that depend on anticipating meaning may be harder when learners are juggling multiple demands. It might be worth working on it explicitly rather than assuming “everyone does it”.
- Lighten the load when teaching prediction. Clear layout, slower pacing & fewer simultaneous tasks help learners benefit from context. In other words, dedicate some time to it.
- Support older adult learners. They may use prediction more, but lose that advantage quickly when tasks become demanding. You could provide learners with choices to lighten the load.
